Mother’s Day Gift Guide: Best Virtual Cooking Classes

Forbes | Irene S. Levine | May 1, 2021

Tamar Lowell, CEO of Access Culinary Trips, designs boutique cooking vacations for food lovers. Apropos of the pandemic, she created Cuiline online cooking classes, which enables her to bring the joys of culinary travel to her clients’ homes, while simultaneously supporting the expert chefs with whom she has worked over the years (some whose restaurants are now closed, temporarily or permanently.)

A month-by-month calendar on the website details the wide variety of classes and provides background information on each chef. On Mother’s Day alone, Cuiline classes will feature the cuisines of Italy, Spain, Costa Rica and New Orleans. As one example, Chef Scott’s Mother’s Day Tropical Fusion class will be streamed from his kitchen in sunny La Fortuna, Costa Rica. It  starts with a refreshing mojito and includes Patacones with Black Bean Puree, Cashew Encrusted Sea Bass with Mango Salsa, and a Chocolate-Espresso Pineapple Flambe.  (Read more …)

I Took a Zoom Class With a Roman Chef. It Was Awesome.

WIRED | Joe Ray | December 21, 2020

"Ciao!" said chef Andrea Consoli to a small group of us on a recent Saturday morning. I'd signed up for two separate classes with "Chef Andrea" in one day. The morning class was run by a setup called Cuiline, where Consoli is a contractor, and he ran the afternoon class independently with his wife, Erica. The morning class was only really morning for me, on the West Coast of the United States; chef was well into his Roman evening. Together we made three dishes in less than three hours: saltimbocca, spaghetti carbonara, and tortino al cioccolato. There's a lot to take in when this is new, like a range of attendee abilities over the course of the day, from the lady who excitedly said, "Chef! I got the Pecor … ano cheese you asked for!" to the guy in the semipro kitchen with a pizza oven. Some people were also fairly new to Zoom.

The son of Sicilians, Consoli ran a cooking school in Rome before Covid changed things. Decked out in a chef's coat and AirPods, he dove right in and set our goals, "We are here to make good food, and not make your kitchen too messy!" The morning-class students had been furnished with a box of some dry goods and were in charge of shopping for the rest themselves. Consoli started with dessert first, getting everyone going on making a meringue and a zabaione riff—chocolate, egg yolks, and butter—then folding them together for batter.  (Read more …)

Culinary and Wine Tour Companies Bring Fine Dining Home

Business Insider | Jamie Killin | December 5, 2020

Creating a social and professional life through a screen has become the norm in 2020, and while "Zoom fatigue" is real, so are the opportunities that come from a world online.

Even prior to the pandemic, the average person might not be able to jet to Italy for a one-on-one cooking class with a celebrated chef or indulge in bimonthly facials, but now more and more people might be able to replicate those experiences virtually or from home.

Businesses in some of the hardest-hit industries — from beauty and wellness to travel and dining — have capitalized on this new reality by finding opportunities to share their luxury experiences far and wide. Several founders shared how they've pivoted to remote offerings with surprising success.

Access Culinary Trips, founded in 2001, coordinates culinary tours of destinations such as South Africa, Alaska, and Croatia. But when the pandemic began, CEO Tamar Lowell knew she had to find new revenue opportunities quickly. Her new venture, Cuiline, launched in July and offers high-end, three-hour online cooking classes for two, connecting people directly with well-known chefs such as Chef Andrea Consoli of Rome, Italy, and Chef Phyllis Glazer of Tel Aviv, Israel, for $185 a class. Next Best Thing To Culinary Travel: Connect With A Chef In Your Own Home Kitchen

Forbes | Irene S. Levine | July 31, 2020

When international travel came to a halt and clients began cancelling upcoming trips, Tamar Lowell, CEO of Access Culinary Trips, realized she had to re-think her business model—at least in the short-term.

For more than two decades, the company had designed boutique cooking vacations, connecting travelers to people and cultures at destinations around the globe. On the heels of a global economic downturn, Lowell was also eager to find a way to support and retain the cadre of expert chefs she had cultivated over the years.

With people spending more time at home and tending to seek nourishment, comfort and diversion through cooking, she realized her company was perfectly poised—by virtue of both its experience and connections—to adapt to the changed environment.  (Read more …)
